Woodland Wonders

Develop understanding of life cycles, food chains/webs, human impact and become aware of the importance of dead wood to other forms of life. Explore and identify trees using keys and use art to create sculptures of trees and their life processes.

Duration:
Half day

On arrival one of our tutors will welcome your group to the Centre and go through the schedule for the day, learning objectives and health and safety issues.

  • As we explore the woodland we'll enjoy a number of activities:
    • Activity - "Find that tree!" Whilst blindfolded investigate different parts of a tree and then try to find the same tree after you've been led away
    • Activity - "Tree Art" Using natural materials make a tree sculpture and annotate with labels of the key features.
    • Activity - "Tree building" Become different part of a tree (roots, leaves, trunk…) to demonstrate how trees make their own food
    • Activity - "Tree ID" Using identification keys to identify different leaves
    • Activity - "Rubbings" Use a variety of tree species to carry out bark rubbings to highlight the differences in texture
  • Next we'll visit the iconic Major Oak tree, and discuss changes of the woodland and conservation
  • Time to head back to the centre

  • Investigate how tree growth is affected by light levels
  • Understand that trees have adaptations which suit them to their environment
  • Learn how to identify trees using keys

Some outdoor clothing and footwear is available at the Centre but please ensure children are dressed warmly with suitable waterproof outerwear. Please dress for the weather. Detailed activity sheets will be provided at the centre for group’s self-leading sessions. Please note all activity programmes may vary depending on number of pupils and their needs, length of visit and weather conditions.
