John Hunt Base at Hagg Farm

In the heart of the Peak District National Park and providing unparalleled access to areas of great natural beauty, the John Hunt Base provides comfortable accommodation within the buildings and grounds of a converted 19th-century hill farm.

The John Hunt Base is located just off the A57 (Snake Pass) in the courtyard at Hagg Farm Outdoor Education Centre and was opened by Lord John Hunt (leader of the first successful Everest expedition) in 1996. The attractive, self-contained unit accommodates up to eighteen people in two-person to eight-person rooms.

The Base provides a lounge with bespoke wooden bench seating and tables, TV, showers and toilets (all wheelchair-accessible) and a fully equipped kitchen.

There is parking for six vehicles in front of the John Hunt Base. A small area of grass just outside the front door has picnic tables which makes for a lovely place to sit on a nice evening.

The Peak District National Park’s Fairholmes Visitors Centre is only a short walk or drive away and bikes can be hired there for the popular cycle around Ladybower, Derwent and Howden reservoirs. A number of footpaths and bridleways run past the John Hunt Base and give access to Win Hill, Edale, Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs for walkers and trail/fell runners. For those wanting a long walk in the hills, the high moors of Kinder Scout and Bleaklow are within striking distance. The gritstone edges of Stanage, Froggatt and Curbar are close by offering some fine rock climbing. The area is famous for fantastic mountain and road biking and secure cycle storage can be arranged on request. Nearby Chatsworth House, Hathersage, Eyam and Buxton offer a change of pace and Sheffield is only twenty minutes away.

Our compact, cosy bunkhouse makes a great base for groups of friends, walking and climbing clubs, sports clubs, church groups, Duke of Edinburgh Award training and anyone who wants to explore this part of the Dark Peak.

Just off the A57 (Snake Pass) between Sheffield and Glossop. We are:

  • 4 miles from Bamford and 12 miles from Sheffield
  • Close to Ladybower/Derwent reservoirs
  • Between Kinder Scout and Bleaklow
